Dear Parents,
As part of our social studies curriculum, the first grade students have been studying wants and needs. As part of our discussion, we learned that there are people in the US who aren’t able to get what they need. The kids were very concerned over this, and wanted to do something to help. One child even suggested buying them a new house!
We explained that helping doesn’t need to be a big thing, but that we can help in smaller ways. From this discussion we decided that we would do a community service project and collect non-perishable foods for the Fuquay-Varina Food Bank. We have partnered up with the FV Fire Department, and will be collecting canned and other non-perishable foods here at school for the next 2 weeks.
The students will be working towards the goal of, “constructing a fire truck” with canned goods. We would like to build a fire truck with our donations, and when this happens, the FV Fire Department will pay us a visit, teach the kids about fire safety, and pick up the food that was donated. The food drive will run until Friday, December 16th. Each child has a goal of at least 6 cans, but we will happily collect any amount that you are comfortable donating.
Thank you in advance for your help in collecting food for those in need! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let us know!
