Achieve 3000/Kid Biz

Posted: 30 Dec 2014 08:26 AM PST
Trailblazers,
Our students in Grades 2-5 have access to this reading program.  If used consistently your child has the opporunity to deepen their comprehension skills and practice reading strategies they are learning in class.  If you have questions, please contact Ms. Moore at dmoore4@wcpss.net.  She is our Achieve 3000/KidBiz Teacher Contact.  :) Mrs. Graf

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Now your child can improve his or her reading skills at home with the same great technology program we're using in school: KidBiz3000.
Throughout the week, KidBiz3000 sends lessons. Every student in the class gets the same basic lesson, but the content is customized to match each child's own reading level. The lesson comes with a variety of fun activities to improve your child's comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills. As your child's reading level improves, KidBiz will increase the level of difficulty so he/she remains challenged and interested. Doing his or her best on the activities will ensure the best match between your child's ability and the content delivered. It is also important that your child's answers to the questions reflect work completed independently and without extra assistance.
Students use this program in class, but you can also share in the fun at home - or anywhere a computer is connected to the Internet. Here's how:
  1. Log on tohttp://login.achieve3000.com
  2. Encourage your child to follow these five easy steps:
Step 1:Respond to the Before Reading Poll.
Step 2:Read the Article.
Step 3: Do the Activity Questions.
Step 4:Respond to the After Reading Poll.
Step 5:Answer the Thought Question.
  1. Explore other KidBiz features, including other articles, the Stock Market game, puzzles, and more.
We hope you enjoy exploring KidBiz with your child.

Fun Times in Second Grade!

Chase and Evan worked as engineers to build a house.  According to the boys, "it's a mansion!"  They even made a blueprint :)

The students researched the anatomy of a pumpkin, labeled the parts, and completed a venn diagram to compare/contrast two pumpkins
Luke made a snack which include marshmallows (ghost poop), candy corn (goblin teeth), cinnamon toast crunch (monster scabs), and chocolate chips (witch warts)!
Hutton and Graham completed a Halloween word search :)
Josh also made a special snack!
Tayla practiced place value (standard form, picture drawing, expanded form, and number word)
The students enjoyed playing this game with book buddies!
Ada and James chose an adjective to describe a pumpkin and decorate!

Message from Mrs. Graf

"The Office of Magnet Programs is hosting its annual Magnet and Early College Fair on Saturday, November 1 at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High Schools 9am - 12pm. 5th and 8th grade families are encouraged to attend to explore their magnet middle and high school options. All early colleges including the new Vernon Malone College and Career Academy will also be in attendance. There will be staff and parents who can answer questions along with school tour schedules. For more information call the Office of Magnet Programs" Thank you, Mrs. Graf

Message from Ms. McCool

Parents, The Banks Road Book Fair will run from November 6th - 14th. During this time, all students will be given time to come through and preview the items available for purchase and make a wish list of items the would like to buy. Parents can then look over their students' wish lists and either come in to buy with them or send in money with their students so that they can come in and make their purchases on their own. If you send in a check, please make it payable to the Banks Road PTA and do NOT include sales tax. If you are interested in helping out at the Book Fair, please feel free to sign up at the following link, http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044da4ae2ca46-banks. The signup will be updated shortly so that you can see when your student's class will be attending their preview. There is also access to our Book Fair online through Scholastic.com. The online fair is available from October 31st - November 20th. Also in regard to the Book Fair, there are a number of our students who are not able to afford to buy a book. During the Book Fair, we will be accepting financial donations for the "All For Books" program. These funds will be used to buy books for these students. If you want to contribute to this program, please send in these donations labeled "All For Books". These funds must be received by Thursday, November 13th so that the books can be purchased and delivered to these students on Friday, November 14th. Last year, we held a coin drive and we raised almost $1000 which enabled us to put one new book in every student's hands. Due to the timing of the Book Fair this year, we are unable to conduct the coin drive. Your donations to this program are greatly appreciated! Thank you very much for your help and participation in the Book Fair.

What have we been learning in class?

In math, we have been learning strategies to help us quickly add and subtract.  The students have been applying these strategies to given word problems, as well as creating their own word problems for classmates to practice with.  As a class, we will continue to focus on explaining our thinking in many different forms (numbers, pictures, and words).  We will continue practicing writing detailed sentences to explain how we got our answers!

In reading, we have been focusing on asking and answering questions with both fiction and non-fiction text. We have also spent a lot of time reviewing the rules and procedures of Daily Five and practicing our three centers back to back.  These centers include Read to Self, Listen To Reading, Word Work, Read to Someone, and Work on Writing.  At first, I will be making the daily center choices for the kids.  As we talk more about making good choices with our centers, the kids will take over and choose what centers they want to go to each day.

In writing, we are currently finishing up our first small moment piece and publishing.  The students are excited about our first writer's celebration in class with cookies and juice.

In social studies, we have been learning about how to be a good citizen at school and in our community/country.  We have also focused on our government and historical figures within it. I am amazed at how much the students have already learned about government in second grade!

In science, we will begin learning about air and weather soon!

Lastly, I wanted to clarify the difference between practice work and assessments.
- Practice work will come home on Fridays in your child's manilla folder with some kind of symbol on it.  Whether that be a check, star, or a smile on it.  Please review this work with your child for mistakes, as I glance over this work but do not always check every problem for accuracy.  You may keep this work at home.
- Assessments will come home throughout the week, in your child's green homework folder.  If you see work in your child's green daily folder on the side that says "return to school", please review the grade (score of 1, 2, 3, or 4) and sign it to indicate that you have seen the work.  Please return this work back to school the following day.  These assignments will be used as a formal grade.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to email me at jbishop@wcpss.net

Updates

I can't believe our first week of second grade has already come and gone!  I hope your child enjoyed their first week of the 2014-2015 school year :)  We spent a lot of time practicing classroom procedures and reviewing expectations.  Almost every student turned in their homework this past Friday-thank you!  If your child did not turn in his or her homework, please send it is as soon as possible.  Reminder:  Homework is due every Friday and students will spend time working during STARS Friday if it is not turned in.  Thank you in advance for supporting your child with this procedure.

Practice Work Versus Assessments:  Each Friday, your child will bring home their Friday folder with practice work they completed throughout the week.  You will see a P written on this work.  Please review the work with your child for mistakes, as I glance over this work but do not always check every problem for accuracy.  If you see work in your child's green daily folder on the side that says "return to school", please review the grade (score of 1, 2, 3, or 4) and initial to indicate that you have seen the work.  Please return the work back to school the following day.  These assignments will be used as a formal grade.

Lunch: Our lunch time is each day at 11:55.  You are welcome to come eat with your child any day!

Volunteers:  If you are interested in volunteering, please stop by the office to renew your application. Volunteers must be approved before volunteering in the classroom or joining us on field trips.

As always, please email me with any questions or concerns.  I am looking forward to a great year in second grade!

Trailblazers,
Here is a link to the Parent Survey for Title I.  Remember this year BRES operated on the school wide model.  All of our Parents Are Connected Nights, our Banks Book of the Year and related activities, the  purchase of additional guided reading leveled books and technology resources were all due to the funds available to us through the federal Title I program.

Please follow this link to take a quick survey regarding Title I here at BRES.  This information will go directly to Central Office Title I.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you.

FYI New Transportation Practices for 2014-2015 School Year

WCPSS will put new practices into place for the 2014-15 school year with the goal of improving yellow bus service for families.  The changes are aligned with the opening of the new school year, and include community outreach to drive the number of last minute student enrollees in the district down, and setting a cutoff date for requesting and receiving transportation on the first day of school.

Families new to using WCPSS yellow school bus service can request transportation service as they enroll in school. For families to receive first day service on their school calendar, they must be enrolled and sign up for bus service approximately one month before the start of school.

What families need to do
Families who have students enrolled in the current 2013-14 school year and have been using bus service will be presumed to use bus service in 2014-15, will be automatically included in the plan, and need take no action.

Families with a kindergarten student who will begin in 2014-15 and already have an older sibling using bus service during the current 2013-14 school year must enroll the rising Kindergartner in school by the cutoff date to receive transportation services.

Families moving into Wake County or newly enrolling in Wake County public schools will be able to sign up for Transportation services as part of enrollment in the school system beginning May 30.  A new form for Transportation service will be part of the enrollment packet.  Again, these families must enroll in school and request bus service by the cutoff date to automatically receive first day transportation services.

Some families have already enrolled new students for 2014-15 prior to the new processes that will begin on May 30. We have created an online form for requesting transportation services that will be available on the Transportation website May 30.  We will send a postcard to these families asking them to visit the online form and click to let us know their need for transportation services.  These families must request bus service by the cutoff date to automatically receive first day transportation services.

Families with students in the school system during the current 2013-14 school year who are not currently using transportation services, but plan to ride the bus at the start of the 2014-15 school year should also use the online form to sign up for service.  Again, the request for bus service must be made by the cutoff date to automatically receive first day transportation services.

Cutoff dates
Year-round calendar schools regardless of track assignment must enroll and request bus service by June 6 to receive first day service.
Modified calendar schools must enroll and request bus service by June 25 to receive first day service.
Traditional calendar schools must enroll and request bus service by July 21 to receive first day service.

For families who request Transportation services after the cutoff date, first day bus service is not guaranteed. Requests received after these cut off dates will be processed in the order received. Transportation will make every effort possible to provide service using existing bus stops as quickly as possible.

Bus stops
Transportation will provide service based on the family’s residence of record. Requests for additional service, such as to before or afterschool programs or other alternative stops, will be considered after the first 30 days of the school calendar. Students who do not use transportation services for 10 consecutive days will be removed from routes. Families would need to request Transportation services using the online form to reactivate the student’s bus stop assignment.

Building better bus routes
These new beginning of the year practices will improve the planning assumptions WCPSS Transportation uses to establish bus routes. In the past, WCPSS Transportation started with the assumption that all students may choose to use bus service and school bus routes evolved during the first weeks of school.  This created a situation where routing specialists could not create the most efficient routes for the start of school, where families could not rely on timely bus service in the early weeks of the school year, and where bus drivers had to drive constantly changing routes.

Beginning the planning process with accurate ridership will reduce the start of the school year challenges and provide for superior bus routing. This will provide families better bus service from the start of the school year. Routes for known riders will be set for the first day of school. Bus drivers will no longer have to wait at stops for families who don’t plan to use the service and will practice set routes to be ready for the first day of school. With superior routing, buses will travel less distance saving money on fuel and maintenance.

Challenge Words

So here we are, another snow day!  I'm sure that all of you are busy working on school work so I just wanted to provide a brief explanation for the challenge words.

Challenge words are mostly nonsense words (not real).  They are mostly multisyllabic words that follow phonics patterns that have been taught so far in class.  Your child may choose the activity for practicing these words.  Examples include: ABC order (although this has not been formally taught in class yet), typing the words on the computer, rainbow write, chalk write, etc. These words are great practice for strengthening your child's spelling and they will not be assessed in class.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Stay warm and enjoy the day!  Remember we have several days of Saturday school to practice our spelling :) Please refer to the WCPSS website for these dates.

Message from Ms. Stephenson-Artist Residency Program

Volunteers Needed for this year's Artist Residency Program
January 21-28 the Banks Road Art Room will host artist Bryant Holsenbeck for this year's Artist in Residency program. Together, Bryant and the students will create random weave forms that will become a beautiful new art instillation for our school.

A few volunteers would be very helpful, especially during the morning sessions with the younger students. The morning volunteer hours are from 9:15-12:00 and the afternoon hours are from 1:00-3:45. If you would like to work for the whole day, feel free to sign up for both the morning and afternoon sessions.
